
Susiyam/Suliyam/Soyyan is one of the traditional sweet in southern parts of Tamilnadu.We usually call it as Soyyan.My mother used to prepare this soyyan during pongal festival.This recipe tastes yum.Suyyam is basically a sweet recipe and it is prepared using Chana dal or Moong dal.
Suyyam recipe is prepared by pressure cooking dal and it is completely mashed,then it is mixed with Jaggery syrup along with cardamom powder.Then it is made into balls and deep fried in Oil by coating maida batter.

Batter Consistency
Batter should not be too thick nor thin,it should be in flowing Consistency.If batter is thick add extra water to make it thin.If batter becomes thin,add extra maida.make sure the batter is soft textured without any lumps.
Dal Consistency
Soak Dal for 3hrs.While cooking dal add water till it gets immersed.Avoid adding too much water.After cooking if it has excess water,filter it and mash completely.
Making of Suyyam balls
Cooked Chana dal and Jaggery syrup is cooked in medium flame till the mixture gets thick.If the mixture is runny,don’t worry cook in medium flame till it gets thicken.Finally make sure the dough is Thick enough to make balls.
Ingredients
Chana dal-3/4 cup
Jaggery-3/4 cup
Cardamom-1 tsp powdered
Maida-3/4 Cup
Salt-1 pinch
Oil for deep frying
Step by Step Photo Recipe
1.Soak Chana dal in water for 3 hrs.

2.Pressure cook Chana dal in water for 3 Whistles.(add water only till dal gets immersed)

3.Once pressure gets released,mash the Chana dal completely.(filter the excess water)


4.Add Jaggery in a pan with 1/4 cup water.

5.Once Jaggery gets dissolved completely,filter it.


6.Then add the filtered syrup and cooked Chana dal in pan.

7.Now add cardamom powder.

8.Mix in medium flame till mixture gets thicken.

9.Once it becomes thick,switch off the stove and Cool completely.
10.Make a balls using the dough.

11.Add maida and Salt in a bowl.

12.Mix it with water.


13.Heat Oil in kadai.

14.Coat the balls in maida mixture.



15.Drop the balls in Oil and Cook in medium flame.


16.Cook till it becomes light golden brown.
